In Loving Memory of Yelli
Yelli was one of our dear friends in the street community here in Texas, and her loss has left a deep ache in all of us. She was a bright, kind, and resilient woman whose presence touched everyone around her. We are honored to share part of her story, with love and respect, so her memory continues to live on.
Originally from Iowa, Yelli traveled with her loyal companion, her beloved dog, Buddy Holly. He was her comfort, her family, and her constant source of peace. When she was incarcerated for a short period, her community rallied around her without hesitation. They cared for Buddy Holly with devotion until the day she could hold him again. That was the kind of love she inspired in people.
Yelli often spoke to us about the struggles she faced navigating the shelter system. Many programs would not allow dogs, and for her, leaving Buddy behind was never an option. If she wanted to stay with him, to keep him safe and close, she had to remain on the streets. It broke our hearts to hear how many choices she was forced to make simply because she loved her dog.
On November 11, Yelli tragically lost her life at the hands of another person. Her passing is devastating, and our entire KSFS family continues to pray for her, grieve her, and honor her. No one should ever experience violence, especially women who are already fighting for their safety day by day. Yelli’s story is a reminder that domestic violence, abuse, and vulnerability affect countless women living on the streets, and they deserve protection, compassion, and systems that truly support them.
Yelli lives forever in our hearts.
Buddy Holly remains surrounded by the friends who loved her most and by our KSFS family, who will help ensure he is safe and cared for.
Forever in our hearts, Yelli.
Your light stays with us.
